Mainland magazine "The Reader" published its first issue in Taiwan on November 30th. It is the first mainland magazine to make it to the island. The magazine, which is headquartered in Gansu province, is another testimony of cross-straits cultural exchange. "The Reader" has been on the mainland's magazine map for thirty years.

The bi-weekly journal, with essays and jokes, is the Chinese equivalent of Readers' Digest in the US. It's a favorite among mainland readers and has been tops in magazine issue volume in China and Asia for thirteen years, and also ranks third around the world.

When "The Reader" appears on Taiwan's newspaper kiosks, it will adopt a traditional Chinese character type, the standard for publications in Taiwan. It will be sold for eighty Taiwan dollars, or 18 yuan. The content of the mainland and Taiwan versions is almost the same. The main difference is that two monthly editions of the mainland magazine will be combined to make one bi-monthly edition in Taiwan.
